An elderly woman is in recovery after suffocating a wolf to death during an attack in a cemetery in a village near Kashan, central Iran.

The wolf attacked the 87 year old, Tajmohammadi, from behind when she was alone in the village cemetery on Friday. Despite her advanced years, the woman managed to suffocate the wolf to death before dragging herself to the road.

The number of wolves in Iran is known to have fallen significantly in the last century with between 300 and 1,000 estimated to exist in the country in 2007. Their main prey tends to be deer, wild boar, mountain sheep and livestock, although in 2005, a homeless man was reportedly eaten alive by wild wolves in the village of Vali-Asr, in northeast Iran.

Iranian wolves tend to be slightly smaller than their northern European and American counterparts, weighing between 55 and 70 pounds; something that may have been of assistance to the elderly woman as she grappled with her attacker.

Tajmohammadi was rushed to Shahid Beheshti hospital in Kashan were she was treated for serious injuries to her head, face and hands. It is reported that the woman lost one of her fingers during the fight, and she remains in intensive care.
