A senior Iranian military official says the country will chase and destroy its enemies beyond the Iranian borders in the event of a military invasion.

During the eight-year Iraqi-imposed war on Iran, “we taught any would-be aggressor the lesson that Iran will not limit self-defense to within its borders,” Fars news agency quoted Brigadier General Yahya Rahim-Safavi, the senior military adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, as saying on Friday.

“If you (enemies) invade Iran… we will chase, punish and target and destroy you beyond the country's borderlines,” he added.

The top military official made the comments during a visit to the southwestern border regions of Shalamcheh where Iran successfully carried out several counterattacks in the 1980s against the Baath regime under former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Brigadier General Rahim-Safavi noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran has throughout history protected the country's territorial integrity and warded off all the foreign threats against its sovereignty.

“Now that [more than] 30 years have passed since the [Islamic] Revolution, Iran's popular revolution has spread across the world -- and what is taking place in North Africa and Yemen is modeled after the Islamic Revolution of Iran.”

The Iranian military official concluded that Iran's expertise in developing military and defense systems has particularly evolved since the days of the war.

The war Iraq imposed on Iran lasted from September 1980 to August 1988 and resulted in the death of about half-a-million Iraqi and Iranian soldiers and thousands of civilians.
