FBI says two suspicious packages intercepted in Britain en route to the US contain no explosives, refuting reports of an imminent attack.

According to a Joint Terrorism Task Force source, a suspicious package containing a toner cartridge with wires and powder was found during the routine screening of cargo in the UK, prompting authorities to scour vehicles in the US on Friday.

US law enforcement sources say that American officials have focused on Yemen as the source of as many as 20 suspicious packages intended for the United States.

FBI intercepted a total of 20 suspected parcels shipped out of the UPS office in the Yemeni capital of Sana'a on Friday.

Three Planes in Philadelphia and Newark in New Jersey were swept as were UPS trucks in New York City.

A Boeing 767 from Paris and an MD-11 from Cologne, Germany, both landed safely in Philadelphia, and items on board were investigated, public relations manager for Atlanta-based UPS Airlines Mike Mangeot said.

The third plane was a 767 that arrived at New Jersey's Newark Airport from East Midlands in the UK, Mangeot added.

Mangeot said the FBI and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) had not given UPS further details about the nature of the packages or what was investigated.

"Out of an abundance of caution the planes were moved to a remote location where they are being met by law enforcement officials and swept," the TSA said in a statement.

Mangeot said the jet at Newark was later cleared for takeoff and was on another flight to Louisville, Kentucky.
